Hospitals are hurting. With Medicaid bankrupt and hospital margins from Medicare in negative territory for almost a decade, hospitals must find ways to improve hospital efficiency by any means possible. If you know how hospitals get paid by Medicare, you know the urgency of the situation.
In my travels as a hospitalist, I've discovered some cost saving initiatives that all hospitals could implement to save them from the up and coming funding disasters. Hospital costs can be reduced with physician education. But we also need to improve our efficiency. I've already discussed my ideas on how to improve hospitalist efficiency. As for nursing efficiency? I think we could get much greater nursing efficiency if we took one simple step and placed these reminder signs at the entrance of every employee restroom. I feel this would dramatically improve nursing efficiency and guarantee that they have the time to implement the 5Ps of hourly rounding.
