What Is Your Weirdest Patient Request Ever?

________________________________

I once had a nurse come up to me stating that her patient was "requesting a note saying it's OK to 'be released to my husband'".

What does that mean? Needless to say, I didn't feel comfortalbe writing such a note.

What's the weirdest request you have ever received from a patient?

Today I had a patient ask me if I'd be willing to walk 1 1/2 blocks with her to her apt to help her change her filter on her A/C because she thought she was getting poisoned from mold. She didn't know how and apparently Nurse K was the first person that popped into her mind to assist her with this. Yeah, sure, I'll just leave my job to change your filter. WTF.

I couldn't keep a straight face with that one, I must admit.

Also today, I also had someone [seriously] put on the call light to request that I give them the phone so they could call an ambulance to take them to another hospital. Um, no? If you want to leave, sign here.

It would, however, be impossible to come up with the "weirdest" [spelled accurately] thing someone has asked...people ask me weird stuff nearly continuously.

"Will you come smell my apartment?" That request came from an older gentleman who lives alone and was paranoid that his apartment smelled bad. Amazingly, the place was spotless (thank goodness).

Another old dude wanted me to help out with his "chelation therapy." Ordered some home remedy from India and was arguing with his doctor about using it to improve his circulation. I had to decline.

I have a friend who is a nurse/case manager, and one of the strangest requests she got was from a husband of a woman who was about to be released from the hospital. He asked if the nursing staff could shave her pussy....Dood, if she won't do it for you at home, don't think you can get it done this way.

kid (my patient)asked me to go out with his mother, explaining I'd be better off than with my wife. True story.
Discharged the entire screwed up family.

Just recently I had a patient request prescriptions in her name for a friend who had no insurance. I refused, but that was a first for me.

I can't think of a good one now, but my wife, a psychologist, had a patient ask her to arrange a flight for her from New England to Chicago. Seriously. The patient then got mad when she explained that her clinic no longer had enough funds for bus tokens.

Had a schizophrenic one time (after the medicines kicked in) ask me if someone could swing by and check on his apartment to make sure that Tim and Harry (his voices) weren't tearing the place up since T&H obviously weren't in the hospital with him any more.

Don't have a weird request story, but as a psych resident in the late 1990s I would often release suicidal patients who weren't quite bad enough to be committed to the care of their relatives overnight, until they could be seen in the psych clinic the next day. Maybe your patient meant something like that
