Yes, there is such a thing as the stat nursing home consult. One reason I love to do hospitalist medicine is the security of knowing I don't have to travel from one hospital to another, traveling across town, spending uncompensated travel time taking care of patients who may or may not pay you for your time.
The same can't be said for specialists and subspecialists who must travel from hospital to hospital taking care of whatever comes their way. So I'm talking to a subspecialist the other day who got a text for a stat consult. Get this... At the nursing home. We laughed. Talk about something that ain't gonna happen. Ever.
It's called, going to the ER.

Stat, tomorrow, next week, next year in this lifetime..nope nobody goes to nursing home for any reason...so they all get shipped to the ER where everybody bitches and whines about why they got sent..what was the subspecialty BTW?
ReplyDeleteHmmm my BS detector's goin off big time...
ReplyDeleteSo he didn't see the patient....good on him...gotta have that Doctor/Patient relationship to be malpractice... can't "abandon" a patient that you've never seen... And I'm thinkin the consult was called in by a mid-level provider... no real doctor has said "STAT" since St. Elsewhere went off the air...
I'm guessin the "Specialist" was some IM subspecialty...and you're right, the reimbursement wouldn't even pay for your gas...
Tell me I'm wrong...
gotta get back to the cataracts...
1cc versed, 1cc fentanyl, season with propofol to taste...
