Swerving Car On the Interstate: What Should I Do? Would You Call 911?

We took a little road trip to Atlanta a few weeks ago. While driving near the city at night we almost got taken out by a truck that was swerving all over the place on the interstate. We followed him for a while while he almost took out a couple other cars. Then I called 911 and guided the State Patrol in. I stayed on the phone for a good 10-15 minutes while the dispatcher guided the patrol in based on our mile markers. They pulled in behind the guy and flipped on the cherries. The guy pulled over immediately. We hung up and kept going on our way.

Would you call 911? We thought the guy was drunk. Maybe he was just tired. Maybe he was just texting someone. Regardless, It felt like the right thing to do.

10 Outbursts:

  1. More than the right thing to do. Aside from being on drugs/alchohol or just tired or perhaps he had a medical problem ...That is my biggest fear when doing road trips is a truck flipping out or losing a tire on me!!

    I would have called.

  2. Yep. I'd do it and have done it in Las Vegas. We guided the cops to a dude driving down the strip drinking a beer while driving. I'd do it again.

  4. I'd do it, if I using a headset and set up the voice commands on my phone - a Blackberry isn't conducive to dialing while driving otherwise (Around here, we dial *999 for some strange reason...)

  5. Yep, and I've done it myself. I followed the guy for 15 until he hit his house while on the phone with dispatch. Turns out the guy was a little tired and driving a rental but I see all to often the result of the road so I think it's our responsibilty as long as we put no one else in harms way.

  7. I've done it before and would do it again. If I'm wrong, and you're just tired, well then, consider it a courtesy that I was concerned enough to try and get you off the road.
