I'm having really bad back pain and am looking for solutions. The bad back pain is nothing radicular. I think I sneezed really hard a few days ago. It's positional and it hurts like hell when I try and jog. It's really low in my back.
Any suggestions on making it go away quickly. It's really putting a damper on my winter workout routine.
Update: I ended up going for some chiropractic back pain manipulation. I felt better. I also did a billing analysis of the chiropractor vs primary care. You'd be surprised at the results. Or maybe not.

How about resting? skip your routine for a while it wont hurt.
ReplyDeleteIm curious what you mean about jogging, is like trotting or something, there are english words im not that familiar, the thing is if this is troting is harmfull for the knees, the impact is greater when you are trotting than walking fast.
My daily routine is walking fast, so my knee will last longer, that was my traumatologist used to say.
If it is muscular, I'd get a hold of The Stick. You can get it at the local running store (LRC). I have one and it works wonders for all sorts of painful areas I get from training.
ReplyDeleteIce, advil, and rest....
ReplyDeleteFlexaril, ibuprofen, good alignment at night (pillow under knees or between legs)
ReplyDeleteAnecdotal: an acupuncturist fixed my lower back pain lingering one month after a wave slammed me to the sand. One session, massage, not needles.
I had this very thing happen about three years ago. Woke up, sneezed and tweaked the shit out of my back. Spasms overtook me. My family practice doc gave me some flexeril. I went home at 10:00 a.m. in the morning and took 1 tablet and lay down to rest. I woke up about 2 p.m. with the longest string of slobber on my pillow. It does more than relax the muscles. It was a small med vacation, but it worked.
ReplyDeleteI've read that sneezing and coughing can cause herniation of lumbar discs.
ReplyDeleteDoes standing back extension aggravate the pain? If not, standing back extension then is my recommendation.
ReplyDeleteAcupuncture, anyone [after ruling out compression, of course]? Take care, Dr. Happy Hospitalist.
ReplyDeleteflexeril...
ReplyDeleteVisit your friendly neighborhood D.O. for some OMT.
ReplyDeleteYou know you can herniate a disc by sneezing.
ReplyDeleteMy advice:
1. flexeril before bed (short term, not long term use); half of what you think you need is probably good
2. ibuprofen
3. gel ice packs (the kind you can also microwave; in a week or so microwave for pain relief).
4. pay attention to ergonomics--chairs, mattresses, footrests, etc. Prevention now is important; that your back goes into spasm that easily indicates it's already vulnerable.
Take a break from the jogging for now and do something more low impact (bike or swim or walk). Listen to your body and don't make it worse. And core muscle exercises.
Contrary to popular advice, though I have other orthopedic issues, I recover best and avoid worse injury from back pain when I listen to my body and rest some, then build back up gradually. I have injured myself badly by continuing to be very active or really pushing myself.
If it still hurts, ask again, and I'll pull out The List.
Its Metastatic Small Cell cancer you got from that 2d hand smoke...
ReplyDeleteTreatments futile, I'd recommend a 45 caliber lobotomy but that's just me. Or it could just be bad case of lumbago...
Hee. Hi Dr. Drac.
ReplyDeleteDr. Happy,
Maybe it's "Hawkeye Back". Remember that episode of "MASH" when he was jealous of a physican friend back home who had some kind of major sucess and it showed up in his "walking around like a question mark" as Col. Potter put it? So, who are you envious of these days? (For the record, i can't imagone you being jealous of anyone, you seem to have it all...).
i have had "Hawkeye Back" ("Syndrome") several times!
Sorry for your pain.
