Fast Food Store Concentration and Stroke Risk. What Do You Think the Answer Is?

Interesting research out that suggests that folks who live near higher concentrations of fast food joints have a higher incidence of stroke.  To the tune of 13% greater risk
The study doesn't prove cause and effect with some suggesting that perhaps fast food joints open up in bad health neighborhoods.

Right.   And everyone at fast food joints are eating salads.

3 Outbursts:

  1. I vote for correlation over causation. A lot of the soul food restaurants (some have been in business over 50 years) have been going out of business in Harlem as the neighborhood is getting gentrified with middle to upper middle class of all ethnic groups. The newer residents prefer healthier foods.

(I thought it hilarious when some politicians were anguished over these soul food joints going out of business since the foods are full of fat, fat, fat -- fried chicken, ....).

  2. I submit that poor people don't necessarily like eating fast/junk food any more than less poor people. Most of the neighborhoods (in my area, one of the US's most segregated cities) in which the poorest live have a preponderance of fast food joints and liquor stores - purveyors of (relatively) cheap junk food. There aren't many proper supermarkets where one might buy fresh meat and produce at reasonable prices in those areas. Although there are efforts to rectify the situation, it doesn't look like it will turn around soon.
