How Often Do Patients Lie To Their Doctor?

How often do patients lie to their doctor?  Well, I'm sure it's a lot and recent research suggests that patient lie often to their doctor. 40% lied about following their doctor's treatment plan. Why am I not surprised?

Try practicing your educational training in a field where 40% of the input data is potentially false. Now try measuring your quality in a field where 40% of the data is potentially false. Impossible. Since we treat dishonest people, expect dishonest data to track outcomes.

5 Outbursts:

  1. They are probably scared of their doctor...

  2. EEEr UUm the opposite can be said in my case. I tell them everything, including what they don't want to hear:) They close their eyes, yawn and crick half way through, and switch off accordingly. I'm sure they would be much happier if I crawled away under a nice dark, damp rock somewhere and perished politely.

  3. I lie (by omission) to my Dr all the time.
I go because I have hypertension like every one else in my family for the past 4 generations. With the proper combination of diet, exercise and meds, it is pretty much in control so I only go every 6 months for a check up.
Why do I have to fill in a questionaire EVERY time with the SAME questions about everything from my mental state to my hearing, to my aches and pains to my sexual life? If I needed to discuss that with him, I'd let him know and make an appointment. In the meantime, let's work on what I came to see him for, please.

  4. Looks more like you can blame your doctor for having it done every time, and blame your third party payor for being stupid in paying it every time. What am I missing here?

  5. I can tell you the docs never READ the sheet of paper they have me fill out. They ask me all the questions I just answered!

Lying to your doctor: I'm pretty good at not lying to the doc. I used to waffle more with the dentist. Now, when they ask me if I floss, I just say "No, 'cos that's nasty stuff." It's not like they can't tell.
